Welcome: Welcome to the WWW site for the 5th Path to Full Employment Conference and the 10th National Conference on Unemployment hosted by the Centre of Full Employment and Equity (CofFEE) to be held at the University of Newcastle, over December 10-12, 2003. You will find all the information about the conference and how you can participate via the links to the left. We will also post latest news (such as program updates) on the site. This year's Conference is very important given that the Government (and Opposition parties) have largely declared unemployment a non-issue. The Australian Treasurer has ventured to claim recently that the Australian economy is "near to full employment". Despite the official unemployment still around 5.6 per cent, there are growing numbers of part-time workers being forced into underemployment and hundreds of thousands of marginal workers outside the labour force count. CofFEE believes the rate of labour wastage in Australia is around 11 per cent. The Australian economy now produces significantly more part-time work than full-time opportunities and some regions have been left behind the more bouyant capital cities. The Conference is important because it brings together a researchers from a variety discipline perspectives who are all still interested in the issue of unemployment and labour underutilisation generally. |
